SAVE OUR GREENSPACE ... in Deer Run and Deer Ridge

The Mayor of the City of Calgary (along with City Council’s support) has  recently passed legislation that may have a resounding and negative impact on our community! Specifically the land next to the Deer Run Community Association and THE major park site in Deer Ridge! Deer Run's AGM is less than a week away and your attendance (Deer Run OR Deer Ridge) is critical. Keep reading on how to know more and/or be involved in the process. Linda Fox-Melway is our representative for both areas and she is to be at the meeting next week with someone from the City outlining the plan. She needs to hear your voice.

This legislation introduces a new framework whereby school lands that are ‘unused’ by the public or separate school boards may be declared as ‘Surplus Land’ and the ownership of said lands will transfer to the City of Calgary, away from the respective school district. Once a site has been declared as ‘Surplus’, Civil planners at the City of Calgary will decide what to do with the land, without any binding public input.

One site in Deer Run and one site in Deer Ridge have already been
re-designated and are now considered ’Surplus’ sites which are subject to the Mayor‘s new change-of-use framework.

Site1 next to the Deer Run Community Center: The first site is the Green Space located in Deer Run, just east of the Community Center (2315 146 Avenue SE). This large field has been cherished by our community residents for decades now, and it is currently the site used by the Colts Football, Foothills Soccer, FH Grassroots Soccer Clubs as well as Deer Run Elementary and various other children‘s sporting organizations. This has been a fantastic green field that the community has maintained for years and it will be tragically missed by our residents if the City of Calgary dictates new use for this space, other than municipal reserve (Green Space).

Site2 yellow slide park: The second ‘Surplus’ site is located in  Deer Ridge on 91 Deermont Road SE which is the large green space widely known as Yellow Slide Park. This lovely park has tennis courts and soccer fields aplenty and has been a favourite place to play for generations of the children. Yellow Slide park was built and donated by volunteers in the “Spirit of Community” and developing or encroaching upon this park would be nothing short of tragic. Do we really want to lose this green space to municipally dictated development?

If the City of Calgary decides not to retain these two properties as Municipal Reserve (Green Space) then the City of Calgary will choose from the following alternate uses for the ‘Surplus’ land (as described in LAS2009-66 Attachment One - click to read the original pdf and it's attachment which shows maps & locations):

  1. Affordable Low-Income Housing
  2. Public library
  3. A police station, a fire station or an ambulance services facility, or a combination of them
  4. A non-profit day care facility
  5. A non-profit senior citizens facility
  6. A non-profit special needs facility
  7. A municipal facility providing service directly to the public

Please attend the AGM on Oct 21 2009, 7pm at the D.R.C.A. and sign our petition in person.
