Deer Run Outdoor Skating Rink Fence Repaired

We would like the community to know that repairs have been made to fix a safety hazard at the Deer Run outdoor rinks.

To our dismay, an incident occurred on January 16. A opening between the wire fencing and boards was letting pucks pass through between the two rinks. A person skating on the recreational rink was struck when a puck was shot through the gap by someone playing on the stick & puck rink. Luckily, the individual was not seriously injured, although the outcome could have been a lot worse.

The incident was reported to us the next day and for this we are very thankful. Without the feedback the issue could have persisted and resulted in more injuries. The feedback was passed on to our Sports Director, Ken Werbicki, who oversees and is an active member of the Rink Ratz.

It was also reported by the injured party that the hockey player apologized repeatedly. In fact, the first thing they wrote to us in their report is:

I do not wish to stop the hockey players from playing on the rinks as I truly think hockey is a great sport and it is nice to see youngsters outdoors doing something physical. I would just like it safe for everyone!!

The fence gap was repaired on the weekend of January 24-25. A crew of Rink Ratz managed to get the whole length of it boarded up. This was a combined effort of Jay, Donovan and our newest rink rat, Joel. Thanks to each of these volunteers for taking the time to fix the fence. There shouldn’t be any issues with pucks slipping through now.

We'd like to remind everyone that the east rink with the bleacher is for stick & puck and the west rink is for recreational skating.

The space is unsupervised, open to the public, and it can be busy.

Deer Run Outdoor Rink (ODR) Safety Tips

  • Helmets are recommended

  • Skate in control at all times

  • Pick-up any garbage from the ice and facility. A garbage can is by the bleachers.

  • Report any big chips/holes that appear in the ice

  • Body-checking, rough play, and slap shots are a no go!

  • Try to keep the puck on the ice

  • Keep the hockey nets on the east rink.

  • Position nets to the wall or away from the rink entrance and seating areas

Kindness is Cool: We love the positive energy you bring to our rinks. Keep that energy flowing by treating other people the way you would like them to treat you.

Thank you for making sure our rinks are safe places to play!

The Community Association takes all safety concerns seriously. You can submit feedback to us through our online contact form.
